Bloggers, You Don’t Need To Get It Right, You Just Need To Get It Going…

One thing I’ve learned over the years of blogging is that you necessarily don’t need to get it right, you just need to get it going.

Stuck CowYou see when I first started out with this blog I was totally stuck. I was putting all my hours into building it but I just didn’t seem to be getting anywhere at all (I kinda felt like the cow to the right).

The reason for that was because I was focusing on trying to get everything “right”, instead of just focusing on getting it out there. I was wasting stupid amounts of time on stupid amounts of stuff, and it was holding me back.

Naturally as a blogger the first thing you do before you start out is have a look at other blogs online in your niche. You want to see what they look like & see what they write about so that you can give yourself an idea of where to start.

However the problem with this is that you start comparing yours to theirs.. You want your blog to look as good as theirs do & you want your posts to be of just as high quality.

The one thing you forget is that the blogs you’re looking at have probably been around for years, and they most likely didn’t look anything like that when they first started out.

You’ve got to step back & realize that you’re comparing your beginning, to somebody else’s middle.

Your blog doesn’t have to look amazing from day 1, and similarly you don’t have to be looking to win the Booker Prize with your first posts.

These things all come with time.

Now I know it’s human nature to want to be the best, and overall wanting to better yourself is a good attitude to have… It just doesn’t have to all be done at once.

When I first launched this blog it was weeks (if not months) before I even got around to publishing my first post. I was installing themes, changing things around, adding plugins & then deciding I still didn’t like it so going back through the whole process again.

Around 5 or 6 themes later I finally got around to writing my first post.

Then, even my post took about 3 or 4 days to come out of the “Draft” stage and actually get published live.

“Should I word it like this?”, “Maybe this sentence would be better here”, “Are my paragraphs too long?”

PerfectionistInstead of just getting on with it and posting it as it was I was then spending my time chopping and changing things, making sure it was “perfect”.

But the fact I’ve come to realize is, nobody really cares.

As a human you’re unique… You have a writing style, and you should express that.

You’ll attract a tighter audience by writing as yourself & targeting those that follow your style, than you would if you were writing in a way to try & please everybody.

People follow your blog, because they want to hear what you have to say, so just write your posts as if you were speaking to them in conversation. Don’t worry if there’s mistakes, they happen – and they make you more real to your audience.

Now I’m not saying publish your posts with typos & spelling mistakes everywhere, but I am saying that you don’t need to get caught up in it, and worry about it to the point of wasting valuable time being a perfectionist.

Blog Design SketchAs I mentioned above, the same goes with your blog layout. It doesn’t have to look amazing, it just needs to serve a purpose.

As long as the visitor can easily read your posts and easily navigate your site then you’re all set… If you want to make it look pretty you can tweak it as you go along, but once again it doesn’t have to be perfect from the off, or even at all for that matter.

So when you start out your new blog, don’t get caught up trying to make it perfect – just get on with it & start blogging. After all it’s no good having a fantastic looking blog if there’s nothing on there for anybody to read.

Plus, I’ll give you a cheeky little tip just to make you feel a little better about your new blog if you’re still a little dismayed…

There’s a website called “The WayBack Machine” which you can use to look at the history of websites and see how they’ve changed over the years.

To use it, all you need to do is click on this link & enter in the URL of the blog you’re comparing yours too…

Then, go ahead & click back a few years to when it was first starting out…

I’m fairly positive you’ll be able to get a nice little confidence boost when you see it wasn’t always so “bling”. 🙂
